CZECH GARNET
(Prague, April 23, 2010) On April 1 and 2, the Středočeský and Prague Inspectorate of the CTI in cooperation with Customs Laboratory performed an extra control focused on weather when purchasing jewellery there are any infringements of the ban to use unfair commercial practices.

In total 7 local checks were performed and 4 controls within which samples of jewellery were collected which were sold as a jewel with Czech garnet (within the control purchase the CTI inspectors requested a jewel with Czech garnet; such a jewel was also offered and purchased as a jewel with Czech garnet). Deficiencies were found at 3 of 4 controlled subjects:

For example in Prague 1 a jewel was collected – a pair of silver ear rings of white Babbitt metal. According to the expertise of Customs Laboratory this is not a jewel with the chrompyrop garnet (i.e. the Czech garnet). It was also detected that the pair of ear rings is even not hallmarked. With regard to this fact, the jewel was handed over for further processing within its competencies.

In another shop a ring of Babbitt metal was collected. According to the expertise of Customs Laboratory this is not a jewel with the chrompyrop garnet (i.e. the Czech garnet). The same case was also a control purchase of a ring from Babbitt metal in another jewellery shop.

In these three cases suspicions were found of committing offence when using unfair commercial practices as the trader provided misleading and untruthful information about the product sold. Further measures will be issued within the competencies of the Czech Trade Inspection.
