Press proclamation concerning TV Nova report on baby-coaches

(Prague, March 12, 2010) Yesterday on March 11, 2010, a report on the Czech Trade Inspection Authority and baby-coaches was broadcast on TV Nova. We consider the report to be misleading and untruthful.

The reporter, Jiří Hynek, claimed untruthful information that the CTIA encoded the dangerous baby-coaches into the warning system Rapex. This never happened. Moreover, the broadcaster provided completely misleading information on the whole case on which the CTIA claimed its clear statement earlier on.

The Czech Trade Inspection Authority has no right to impeach the results of the products analysis by the official lab of the Institute for Testing and Certification in Zlín who insists on their analysis results and on the danger the baby-coach stands for.

Due to the analysis performed by the official lab, violations of content of primary aromatic amines limits were detected. Not even the Czech Republic’s chief Hygiene Officer did designate these results as wrong. He, from his state point, assessed the baby-coach (Quinny Speedi a Maxi-Cosi Mura) and claimed that the baby-coach is wholesome and meets the requirements of applicable standards. We respect this statement. We do not know the reasons why the statement of the Czech Republic’s chief Hygiene Officer and the official laboratory differ. From the competence point of view, now the Czech Republic’s chief Hygiene Officer has to defend his statement because we have not received any other analysis of any official laboratory that would refute the original results. The Czech Trade Inspection Authority has no proof due to which it could change its opinion. We do not judge nor defend any statements of other state bodies’ representatives.

This is a proclamation of an official laboratory, the only official proclamation that the Czech Trade Inspection Authority has got in disposition and the Czech Republic’s chief Hygiene Officer did not refute it nor identify it as wrong!

In both baby-coaches were detected violated limits of content of primary aromatic amines in the handhold that is touched by the baby. Regarding hygienic parameters, the both technical reports were processed in accordance with the applicable Czech legislation, i.e. the Rule No. 84/2001 Coll. describing hygienic requirements on toys and products for children below 3 years of age.

The TV Nova report was full of emotions and impressions. Except for the opinion of the Czech Republic’s chief Hygiene Officer the report did not show any relevant proves for any Czech Trade Inspection Authority mistakes. This is the reason why we ask TV Nova for their apologies and good-making.
