Warning to consumers from Czech Trade Inspection

(Prague, June 15, 2010) In the context of increasing numbers of notifications containing complaints on not informing about prices of phone calls concerning numbers beginning with the number 900, the Czech Trade Inspection decided to draw consumers’ attention to the fact that dialling these numbers is billed with an increased tariff rate.

The most frequent case is that consumers complaint about the fact that they reacted on premium offers in the press and called first on an ordinary telephone number where the announcement machine adviced them to call a number beginning with 900. These claimants always complain that they were not informed about the tariff rate of such phone calls. Nevertheless, within the controls of these notifications, in all cases it was discovered that the announcement machines information contains the phone call conditions, including the price for 1 minute of the call. The information is provided at the very end of the announcement, so the consumers did not listen till the end or they did not pay enough attention to this information. The final amount billed for such a phone call (also due to its length) can reach even several hundreds of Czech crowns.

This is why the Czech Trade Inspection alerts consumers that calling telephone numbers beginning with 900 has always got an increased tariff rate. The price of 1 minute of the call is expressed by the fourth and fifth figure of the telephone number. For example, dialling the telephone number 900 082 239 costs 8 CZK per minute; calling the telephone number 900 952 357 costs 95 CZK per minute and so forth. This is why you should pay reasonable attention to the number you dial and also to the announcement machine that informs you about the tariff rate. You can avoid unpleasant payments.
