Dangerous battery-powered toys

(Prague, May 6, 2009), the Czech Trade Inspectorate discovered that dangerous consumer products are being sold on the Czech market. These products represent a serious danger, mainly for small children.

These products are children´s toys - plush camel and elephant, both powered by batteries. Toys were manufactured in China.

“If the zipper in the lower section of the toy is opened, the soft filling material may be taken out and small children may swallow it or tear it apart into small pieces," said RNDr. Jana Příhodová, the General director of the Czech Trade Inspectorate. “The battery compartment may be freely accessed without the need to use tools, only by unzipping the zipper.” said Mrs. Příhodová and added: “Batteries are stored in an open case and directly inserted into the soft filling material inside the body of the toy.”

The CTI forbade these products from sale and ordered the distributor to recall these products from the market. It also established the applicable responsibility to immediately inform consumers about the existing risks relevant to the use of these products.
