Before-the-Christmas sale and Christmas sale

(Prague, December 3, 2009), Due to the fact that Christmas time is approaching fast, the CTIA began with its annual inspections focusing on the selected locations, shopping centres, kiosks, market places and booths. This inspection focuses mainly on the sale of Christmas goods.

The inspection will focus on selected goods, such as advent garlands and decorations, candles, candle holders, Christmas decorations, light chains, Christmas tree, the sale of live fish and also on fireworks products.

During inspections of advent garlands and decorations and other products, it is necessary to take into consideration the character of the product, the intended use and then focus on possible safety risks. Sellers are obligated to provide required product information and to mark products as required. For example, if buying candles, consumers should be informed about dangers that may occur if candles are left burning without supervision, about possible fire hazards if left near flammable objects etc.

Inspection focusing on the sale of Christmas trees and live fish will focus mainly on the sale itself, whether prices are fair, whether consumers are aware about the price and whether other services they pay for (e.g. fish kill, tree packaging, etc.) are fair.

Inspection of firework related products will focus on the safety class and whether such products comply with the necessary safety class requirements, whether they are marked with the applicable safety class, date of manufacture, expiration date (date before such products must be used) and whether the consumer was informed about the correct use.

In stationary stores, inspections will focus on the fact whether storage regulations and amount of stored goods (in kilograms) are complied with.

Inspections of firework products and equipment will focus on whether fireworks of class II are not  sold to people below the age of 18.

The CTIA already began to inspect the sale of firework products. For example, the Ústecký and Liberecký Inspectorate already began with these inspections. 2 kiosks at the Hřensko market were already inspected by the police of the Czech Republic and by CTIA inspectors. In both cases, the seller did not offer fair prices for firework products.

Sellers were issued fines in the total amount of CZK 4.000,- payable immediately at their store.

In a convenience store in Varnsdorf, firework product of class II was sold to a person below 18 years of age. The seller was issued a fine in the amount of CZK 1.000,-.
