Respect manuals when using Thai lanterns!
(Prague, May 31, 2011) On the grounds of a consumer notification, the Czech Trade Inspection Authority checked Thai lanterns. There was a suspicion that products are not marked properly and do not contain any information warnings, safety guidelines and manual. “The most serious risk to their users is – the same as in the case of pyrotechnic products – not respecting Thai lantern manuals, especially instructions concerning their safe use,” alerts ing. Jan Štěpánek, the Acting Director General of the CTIA.
All inspectorates participated in the control action which ended on April 14, 2011. The objective was to check whether products are sold that could damage user’s heath as a consequence of their unsuitable mechanical and physical features, bad construction, insufficient or incorrect warnings and other information required to meet basic safety requirements.

Out of the total number of 118 controlled subjects, defects were found only in three cases. In these cases, information on the marking of the lanterns was provided only in a foreign language. All the checked subjects were issued remedy.

Conclusion:
Despite the fact that the CTIA did not find any facts that could lead to restrict sale of these products, operative controls in the frame of the CTIA surveillance activities will continue. The reason for this is the fact that by the public, Thai lanterns are perceived as dangerous. This danger, the same as in the case of pyrotechnic products, stems above all from incorrect use, respectively failures to respect safe use instructions.
