The CTI performed inspections in connection with the EU presidency of the Czech Republic

(Prague, March 3, 2009), during the first two months of this year, all inspectors of the Czech Trade Inspectorate performed a wide variety of inspections throughout the entire Czech Republic, which were directly or indirectly connected with the EU presidency of the Czech Republic.

Within the scope of this special inspection activity called “The Presidency”, inspectors of the CTI, often closely cooperating with the police of the Czech Republic and with employees of the Trade and Licensing Offices, were focusing on inspection of establishments providing food services to the general public, establishments providing accommodation services, taxi services, counterfeited products, winter sport gear rental stores and establishments providing services relevant to the tourism.

The CTI was mostly focusing on the existing and notorious phenomena, existing in the consumer politics, such as discrimination against foreigners (double pricing policies or different price for the same type of service). Further, correct pricing and charging policies were inspected and also whether price information responsibilities are observed, because more often than ever, the consumer is given price amounts in EUROS.

For example, in the city of Prague, CTI inspected 16 establishments providing taxi services. In 3 cases, inspectors discovered pricing discrepancies, which violated the Consumer rights protection law. On the other hand, inspection of 6 establishments providing accommodation services in the centre of the city of Prague, discovered no violations or no double pricing policies or discrimination against foreigners. In the city of Ostrava, the CTI performed inspections in connection with the conference called “Providing energy and power supply security within the European Union, in connection with the mutually shared electric power supply market. 7 establishments providing food services to the general public have been inspected. Shortcomings and deficiencies were discovered in five restaurants/establishments.

The inspection results obtained during the EU presidency of the Czech Republic are not much different from the current findings. However, the CTI will continue with these inspection activities in the future.
