CTIA controlled services for visitors of the IFF Karlovy Vary
(Plzeň, June 22, 2011) The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary has become significant both for professional and laic public and is attractive for film fans both from the Czech Republic and abroad. Those who do not belong among VIP guests use alimentation and accommodation services in the area. Inspectors of the CTIA checked abidance of such services with laws. And the same as in the previous years, there were reasons to impose fines – defects were found in more than 40% of controls.

From July 1 to July 8, defects were found in 27 cases, i.e. 43.5%, within 62 controls of entrepreneurs providing services in various restaurants, bars and also at the camp site. The most frequent finding was failure to provide declared amounts of drinks and weighing goods together with packages and related damages to consumers – financially, the damages counted from CZK 1 to 49. Other deficiencies detected by the inspectors consisted of using of uncertified measuring tools, missing information on prices and giving out bills without legally defined information.

Speaking about services, a real curiosity was an offer of services that were not arranged at all. In its leaflets, a roadhouse with camping advertised all-day restaurant services and entertainment in a billiard bar, including music and dance evening parties at a terrace and a pool. However, the restaurant indeed provided only breakfasts from 7.30 to 11 a.m. and was closed afterwards for the rest of the day. Due to the restaurant being closed, none of the announced activities could be held. No price list of accommodation was available to consumers in the time of control as it was hidden behind a festival poster and prices of accommodation services were provided only in EUR.

As for the rest of the controls, 2 shops in the very centre of Karlovy Vary can be mentioned. Sale of products that were illegally labelled with trade-marks Burberry and My Little Pony was detected. All 36 pieces of fakes were taken.

At the spot, inspectors imposed 5 fines and 8 orders in the total amount of CZK 12,000. Administrative proceedings will be launched with the other 14 controlled subjects.

When we compare this year’s results with the last year, the rate of detected defects related to the number of controlled workplaces is approximately the same; this year it is only 3% lower.

This year, inspectors did not find cases of consumer discrimination in any accommodation facility that would refuse a customer despite having free capacities. The maximal detected damage to a consumer was CZK 49 this year, while in 2010 it was CZK 279.
