Presentation events - traps for both seniors and inspectors (Interim report - first three quarters of 2011)
(Prague, October 18, 2011) Trip only for CZK 99, gifts for ladies and gentlemen and for married couples... Who would resist such offer? The bus picks you up not far from your house in the morning and drops you at the same place in the evening. Who cares about a 3-hour presentation of God knows what miracles being a part of this “trip of knowledge”? I do not want to buy and will not buy anything, I will get some sleep, meet friends from the neighbouring village and learn what’s new... and in the end I will get a bottle of wine, a present I can always use. This is what a pensioner thinks after finding a presentation event invitation in his mailbox in which the event is presented as a trip. However, subsequent complaints received by the Czech Trade Inspection Authority concerning manners of companies’ representatives and contracts concluded at presentation events as well as the experience of CTIA employees are far away from idyllic trips. Breaches of one or more obligations provided by law were found in 120 out of 170 control actions carried out in the first three quarters of this year, i.e. 70.6% of the controls. So far, 71 fines in the total amount of 1.3 million CZK have been imposed.
