Plastic bags cannot be offered for free anymore

(Prague, January 2, 2018) As from the New Year’s Day, plastic bags can only be sold, as governed by the amendment of the Act on Packaging. The Czech Republic joins a number of other EU countries that prohibited provision of plastic bags for free based on ecological reasons. From January 1, 2018, it is obligatory to sell plastic bags offered to customers in shops. There is one exception – very light plastic bags 15 micro meters thin that are necessary based on hygienic reasons or are provided as sales packages for unpacked food (e.g. bakery and vegetables) in case that their use prevents from wasting food.
